Audience and purpose

This third week, I learned chapter 2 which audience and purpose. Possibly the two most important things a writer must consider are audience and purpose.   Communication can’t happen without an other and it is useless without a general or specific agenda.  For a writer, it just makes good sense to know who are directing work toward and what want work to accomplish.  And it’s equally important that reader feels a part of intended audience and that understands what want work to say.  In this sense, audience and purpose work in two directions. A writer’s audience will influence his purpose, while purpose will influence which audience the writer chooses to address.

As a reader and as a writer, the first time you approach a text it is important to think about purpose and audience. We must always think :

  • Why am I writing this? (purpose)
  • Who am I writing this for? (audience)
  • So what sort of writing will suit this purpose? (form)
  • So what style do I need to write in?
Definition of audience
  • An author’s audience is the particular group of readers or viewers that the writer is addressing.
  • The two main factors that need to be consider are: -Who is it for? -What do you know about them?

Definition of purpose
  • An author’s purpose is his or her main reason for writing.
  • The main consideration factor is: -Who is this for?

Finally, after end this chapter, I able to define the term Audience and Purpose, able to identify the Audience and Purpose, able to understand Rhetorical Triangle.
